01.04.2019 IT-Market-Model release

Hamburg, 03.19.2019 – The IT market is growing steadily, which can be attributed to the strong software and IT services segments. Findings such as this are provided by Statista's new IT-Market-Model, which analyzes the IT market, presenting the trend of recent years and producing a forecast for global development up to 2021. More than 3,000 statistics in four languages on 29 countries and 33 segments give in-depth insights into market size, market growth as well as market segments and offer the possibility of comparing the segments of different markets.

While global revenues from IT equipment have slightly decreased, the IT market keeps growing. Consistent with this trend, the IT market in the United States is growing too, except that all sub-segments (IT services, IT equipment, and software) are growing as well.

The growth of the IT services segment is best illustrated by cloud services. Cloud services will grow globally by 45 percent by 2021, just as the sub-segment hosting, storage, and computing. In the United States, revenues will increase considerably too. As a matter of fact, growth will even be slightly higher there: The cloud services segment and the hosting, storage, and computing sector will grow by 47 percent.

These findings are derived from Statista's new IT-Market-Model. The model aims to present and predict the global development of the market in selected countries and regions such as Europe and North America. In order to do so, the IT market is divided into three main segments – IT equipment, IT services, and software – and into 30 different sub-segments, such as laptops, operating systems, cloud security, or IT infrastructure. As far as IT equipment is concerned, the model takes into account both B2C and B2B revenues; the segments software and IT services, on the other hand, are primarily analyzed by considering their business-to-business revenues.

The model examines 29 countries, including Germany, the USA, and the UK, whose data are also aggregated into regions such as North America, Europe, and Worldwide. The statistics and forecasts cover a period of five years (2016–2021).

Methodology

In order to assess the global IT market, Statista has opted for a combined research approach: While all data related to IT equipment are based on the analyses of statistical data on international trade relations and local consumption, the sub-segments software and IT services have been modeled bottom-up. The necessary data have been identified by comprehensively assessing the most important financial data of software and IT service providers.

The forecasts are based on statistical methods and assessments by our analysts and will be reassessed and updated twice a year to take into consideration current market developments and trends. In the course of these updates, there will be an expansion of the model to include 150 countries and additional product segments.
