Men's Wimbledon 2019: Share of points won on the first and second serve
Many tennis players, and fans, often assert that the serve is the most important shot in the game. As the two dependent variables in this statistic are categorized by round, and as it can be inferred that the proportional quality of the competitors within each subsequent round is increasing it would follow that the percentage of the points that were won by the serving player on the first serve should also increase. This trend is visible in the 'First Serve Points Won' statistic for the 2019 Men's Championship, with the percentage first serve points won increasing from 71 percent to 75 percent from round one to round four, followed by a decrease to 71 percent in the quarter-finals, which then once again increases to 76 percent by the finals.
Although this trend is not observed in the percentage first serve points won, it should be noted that the 'Second Serve Points Won' statistic does not count double faults as a point lost, as this in this circumstance it is considered that there was no valid second serve.
