New coal power projects in Asia are likely to be unprofitable even under a business as usual scenario, due to the competitiveness of renewable sources. As of 2021, the combined net present value of coal projects in the five countries with the greatest coal power pipeline was negative 149 billion U.S. dollars. China alone had a net present value amounting to negative 83 billion U.S. dollars. Net present value is the difference between the present value of cash inflows and outflows, and is used to analyze the profitability of an investment.
