The healthcare sector was the most energy intensive real estate sector in 2020 according to a survey among 88 listed real estate companies with a total market cap of 262 billion euros in Europe. A square meter of a healthcare building had an energy consumption of 145 kilo-watt hours per square meter per year, while for self-storage building this figure was 25 kilo-watt hours per square meter. The office sector ranked second with an annual per square meter energy consumption of 141 kilowatt-hours.
