Dependency ratio in Italy 2012-2024
In 2024, per 100 workers, there were 57.5 Italian citizens not in labor age. The dependency ratio in the country increased steadily in the past years. This may cause serious problems for the sustainability of the pension system. In fact, the more the index increases, the greater the pressure laborers have to bear in sustaining the welfare schemes. As a result, the share of the population who relies exclusively on families and pensions as their unique source of income extends, while the number of payers of social security contributions contracts.
