Christmas in Italy - statistics & facts

Possibly the most popular holiday in the country, Christmas is one of the most exciting moments of the year for Italian consumers. A time for food, decorations, and gift shopping, shoppers in Italy were expected to generate around 38 billion British pounds in retail spending over Christmas. However, in the same year, over 65 percent of Italians taking part in a survey stated that they were planning to cut back on spending during the holiday season. This is a higher share of respondents compared to 2022, but comes as no surprise considering the increase in prices of Christmas products such as Christmas decorations or Hi-tech gifts. Despite this, the average spending per capita on Christmas gifts in 2023 was forecast to increase compared to the previous years, reaching a value of around 186 euros.

Holiday gift shopping

Nearly 40 percent of consumers in Italy started gift shopping in November 2023, and a larger share stated that they would shop for Christmas presents during Black Friday.The leading shopping channel for Christmas gifts that year was e-commerce, ahead of physical stores, supermarkets and malls. Among the most popular Christmas gifts, more than 40 percent of Italians listed clothing, beauty products, and books, followed by toys and fashion accessories.

Christmas decorations

One of the most common Christmas traditions in Italy is decorating your home. In 2022, approximately 86 percent of people in Italy decorated their homes for the holiday season. About 15 percent of consumers spent between 51 and 100 U.S. dollars on Christmas decorations that year, and as many as 91 percent of them answered that Christmas trees were their favorite decoration. Christmas trees are considered one of the symbols representing Christmas the most in Italy, but this decoration also experienced an increase in price as of 2023.
