Gaming in Germany - statistics & facts

The gaming industry is growing rapidly, with global revenue of the video game market almost doubling from 2017 to 2022. One of the main reasons for this is the development of technology. Although videos games have been around for decades, they now look very different with more advanced graphics, progression, and storylines throughout the game. Virtual reality creates a more engaging and immersive experience for the player.

Gaming market in Germany

2022 saw the highest figure to date for the gaming market in Germany, at almost 9.9 billion euros. Revenue does not just come from video games or consoles, but also from in-game purchases. Users often make in-game purchases because it improves the playing experience. The share of in-game purchases actually made up almost 70 percent of revenue from the computer and video game market, excluding hardware. When it comes to how people play video games, the most popular way is on a smartphone. This is likely due to convenience, because most people always travel with their phone, and so playing games on it is an easy way to pass the time.

Video games and players

There is perhaps a common stereotype that young men are the main demographic playing video games, however, in Germany this is not the case. In fact, only slightly more men play video games than women. This could be due to the diverse choice of games that are now available. The most popular video game changes every year, but currently the top three in Germany are EA Sports FIFA 23, Pokémon Legends: Arceus and Elden Ring. Another reason for the popularity of video games is that they can serve as a source of income for the most successful players. Some gamers record themselves playing games and post the videos to YouTube, or even stream themselves live on Twitch. There are also competitions hosted in which top gamers compete against each other either alone or in teams for prize money, which in some cases can make them millions.
