JD Sports Fashion Plc has strongly pursued a policy of expansion in recent years, acquiring a number of brands across the world in an attempt to expand global reach. In 2023 alone, JD Sports’ acquisitions included but were not limited to included Polish company Marketing Investment Group, France-based Courir, and Iberian Sports Retail Group, which has stores across Europe. This policy has seen the number of territories where the group operates double from 2020 to 2023, reaching a total of 38.

JD Sports' Revenues

This expansion has brought a remarkable increase in revenues. In the financial year 2023, JD Sports Fashion Plc generated over 10.1 billion British pounds. In comparison, five years previously, the company made 3.16 billion pounds in revenue in financial year 2018. The region with the highest share of this revenue is still the company’s domestic market of the UK and Ireland. However, the North American market has grabbed a significant share over recent years, with almost one third of revenues in 2023. JD Sports' most sold category in that year was footwear, which accounted for roughly 5.5 billion pounds of revenue, 1.9 billion pounds more than the next biggest segment, apparel.

JD Sports’ Brands

JD Sport’s acquisitions has left the company with a significant portfolio of brands to its name. Of these, the JD Sports brand still has the highest number of stores, with 444 in the UK and Ireland and almost as many across Europe. There are, however, 128 JD US stores, meaning Finish Line is the brand with the biggest presence in the United States. JD Sports bought the sneaker store brand in 2018. DTLR, another U.S. chain of sneaker stores, had 246 stores in 2023. In the domestic market, JD Sports was one of the most recognized sports and outdoor online shops in 2023, with a brand awareness of 93 percent, which placed it only behind Nike and adidas. Other brands belonging to the company scored lower, GO Outdoors and Blacks scored 59 percent and 43 percent respectively.
