Distribution of households in poverty in rural and urban India 2019-2020, by quintile
As of August 2020, respectively 50 percent and 29 percent of urban Indian households in the third and fourth quintiles, the two highest quintiles of pre-COVID-19 consumption, had to live below the poverty line after the pandemic. Meanwhile, rural poverty in India was also exacerbated by the pandemic, with respectively 34 percent and 16 percent of households in the third and fourth quintile falling below the poverty line in August 2020 within one year.
