Out-of-pocket member payments in South Africa 2015-2021, by scheme type
As of 2021, members of open medical schemes had the highest out-of-pocket outlays, with payments amounting to around 12.5 billion South African rand (668 million U.S. dollars). However, members of restricted medical schemes, paid out significantly less from their medical savings account, with about 4.1 billion South African rand (219 million U.S. dollars) in layouts. This is due to restricted schemes being more comprehensive.
