As of March 31, 2023, Sweden had by far the highest carbon tax rate within the Nordics countries, at over 125 U.S. dollars per metric ton of CO₂ equivalent (USD/tCO₂e). In comparison to 1991, when it was first established, Sweden's carbon tax rate has more than tripled. Meanwhile Finland, the first Nordic country to establish a carbon tax, had the third highest rate in the region, at 83.7 USD/tCO₂e.
