Share of highly polluting new private cars registered in Europe 2023, by country
In 2023, roughly 15.4 percent of new private car registrations in the United Kingdom had an emissions intensity above 160 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer (gCO₂/km). This was similar to Germany, where 16.4 percent of new private car registrations were above 160 gCO₂/km that year. However, the proportion of new registrations in Germany above 200 gCO₂/km was lower than in the UK.
Meanwhile, just 0.7 percent of new private car registrations in France had an emissions intensity above 160 gCO₂/km.
