Greenhouse gas emissions from solid waste disposal in Italy 1990-2021
In 2021, solid waste disposal accounted for 15.7 million tons of CO2 equivalent of greenhouse gas emissions in Italy. The level of GHG emissions increased constantly up to 2000, when the value peaked at 19.3 million tons of CO2 equivalent. From then on, the level of emissions produced from solid waste disposal gradually decreased, although a new increase was observed in 2020.
In comparison, GHG emissions from waste incineration in Italy amounted to only 163,000 tons of CO2 equivalent in the same year.
