The fertility rate indicates the number of children that would be born to a woman if she were to live to the end of her childbearing years and bear children in accordance with age-specific fertility rates of the specified year.
In Italy, 1.2 babies were born per woman in 2023. The macro-region with the highest fertility rate was the south, with 1.24 children born per woman, followed by the islands and the north-east. On the contrary, females in the center gave birth only to an average of 1.12 babies.
