As of April 2023, proposed new coal mines in China would have annual methane emissions amounting to nearly 690 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e). Russia's proposed new coal mines would have the second-largest annual methane emissions, but by a wide margin, at some 77 MtCO₂e.
