Global Warming Potential factor. This accounted for almost half the global energy sector's total methane emissions.
National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) emitted 5.9 million metric tons of methane in 2021, making it the global energy sector's biggest methane-emitter. The oil and gas giant Gazprom followed, with emissions of 4.1 million metric tons. The top 30 companies were responsible for an estimated 54 million metric tons of methane emissions in 2021, or roughly 4.5 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent when converted into CO₂e using 20-year Coal mine methane (CH4) emissions from state-owned and investor/privately owned enterprises worldwide (in million metric tons)
