May 1st demonstrations in France 2002-2023, by police and organizers' estimations
In 2023, France went through an important movement of opposition, with demonstrations organized monthly, to protest against the new pension reform carried out by Emmanuel Macron's government. Still, the reform was adopted in Spring 2023, and in that context, on the May 1, 2023, more than 2.3 million people were in the streets (according to organizers' estimations) for the International Workers' Day. According to police estimations, this was the largest May 1 demonstration since 2002, when the far-right party of Jean-Marie Le Pen reached the second round of the presidential election.
