May 1st demonstrations in Paris 1995-2023, by police and organizers' estimations
In 2023, France went through an important movement of opposition, with demonstrations organized monthly, to protest against the new pension reform carried out by Emmanuel Macron's government. Still, the reform was adopted in Spring 2023, and in that context, on the May 1, 2023, around 550,000 Parisians went to the streets (according to organizers' estimations) for the International Workers' Day. On the other hand, the police estimated there were only around 112,000 people in the French capital. However, it was still the largest May 1st demonstration since 2002, when the far-right party of Jean-Marie Lepen reached the second round of the presidential election.
